A mother and daughter from Virginia died late Saturday after a wrong-way crash took place near the Interstate 270 Spur in Bethesda, Maryland.

The Maryland State Police identified the women on Sunday as Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and Areebah Jahin, 23, of Burke and Alexandria, Virginia.

Both women were passengers in a Toyota Camry hit by a Ford Mustang that was traveling northbound on the southbound I-270 lanes. The crash occurred just after 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, according to Maryland State Police.

Two additional people that were in the Toyota — the 62-year-old man driving the car and a third passenger identified as an 8-year-old girl — were hospitalized for their injuries. Police have not detailed the extent of their injuries.

Maryland State Police said investigators “believe impairment may be a contributing factor in the crash.”

The driver of the Mustang, identified as 32-year-old Germantown resident Jose Caballero Nolasco, is facing several charges. State Police said Nolasco was charged with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and one count of life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.

He remains held at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Rockville.

An investigation into the deadly crash closed the roadway for approximately five hours.
