Heading into the new school year, WTOP sent questionnaires and requested interviews with school leaders across the D.C. region.
Here’s Arlington Public Schools Superintendent Francisco Durán in Virginia on the opportunities and challenges facing the school division as the academic year begins.
Durán: I am looking forward to welcoming our students and staff back for another year of learning, growth, and opportunity. Every new school year brings a fresh start, and I am excited to see our community continue building on strong relationships, innovative teaching and student success while opening new learning spaces and opportunities.
Durán: Like many school divisions, APS is balancing rising costs and evolving student needs while remaining focused on providing an exceptional education for every student. We will continue using resources strategically, supporting student and staff well-being, and strengthening academic outcomes while maintaining the programs our community values.
Durán: APS continues to monitor potential federal funding changes. While some uncertainty remains, our priority is supporting students and maintaining high-quality learning. Thanks to the prudent planning and fiscal stewardship of our Finance team, APS is well-positioned to navigate changing circumstances while remaining focused on student success.
Durán: Technology, including AI, can enhance learning when used thoughtfully and responsibly. AI is intended to support, not replace, our educators. APS will continue professional learning while developing an Academic Integrity policy that includes AI as part of broader expectations for ethical learning, originality, and responsible technology use.
