DC area in a heat wave through Thursday, raising severe storm risk

A heat wave is gripping the D.C. area, with highs in the mid to upper 90s and heat index values between 100 and 105 expected to linger through Thursday.

The high heat and humidity set in Tuesday, with temperatures climbing into the mid 90s.

Students at Parkdale High School in Riverdale, Maryland, were sent home at 10:30 a.m. due to a lack of air conditioning, Prince George’s County Public Schools said in a social media post.

WEATHER

UPCOMING

The National Weather Service said to expect hot and humid weather through Thursday, with daily thunderstorm chances and a risk of severe thunderstorms.

Dangerous heat continues Wednesday, with a few afternoon and evening storms possible. Some could become severe.

An approaching cold front increases storm chances Thursday. Heat index values may again approach 105 before afternoon and evening storms develop. Some storms could be strong to severe, though timing remains uncertain.

The cold front begins moving through the D.C. area Friday, bringing additional storm chances while gradually easing the most intense heat.

“A much more comfortable stretch of weather settles into the DMV for the holiday weekend,” 7News Meteorologist Steve Rudin said. Saturday and Sunday will see highs in the 80s, Labor Day temperatures could top out around 80, and it should be less humid all weekend.
