The D.C. region could see multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms Wednesday, as another stretch of late-summer heat and humidity settles over the area.
The National Weather Service said there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms across much of the region through Wednesday night, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat.
Storms are expected to become more numerous during the afternoon and could continue into the overnight hours.
The rough weather began creeping into the D.C. area around 12:40 p.m., when the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Carroll, Anne Arundel, Howard, Harford, Cecil and Baltimore counties and Baltimore City. That warning has expired but storms continue to pop up in parts of the region.
Active weather warnings:
Temperatures around the immediate D.C. area will reach the upper 80s Wednesday, but hotter weather is on the way.
Thursday is expected to be the hottest day of the week, with highs climbing into the mid-to upper 90s in parts of the region and heat index values reaching 100 to 105 degrees in many areas. Some locations could feel even hotter.
Another round of strong to severe storms will be possible with additional thunderstorms in the forecast Friday.
The heat and storm chances are expected to ease heading into Labor Day weekend, with cooler and less humid conditions arriving during the weekend.
“A much more comfortable stretch of weather settles into the DMV for the holiday weekend,” 7News Senior Meteorologist Steve Rudin said.
Saturday and Sunday should reach the high 80s, and Labor Day temperatures could top out around 80.
