As elected officials continue to consider the future of the Dickerson incinerator, some county residents spoke out Wednesday against any plan that would increase the amount of waste processed through the Shady Grove Transfer Station in Derwood. 

Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke (D-Dist. 7) and Sidney Katz (D-Dist. 3) hosted a community meeting at the county Department of Highway Services Depot in Gaithersburg on Wednesday evening. Dozens of people gathered to ask questions and share feedback with staff from the county’s Department of Environmental Protection. 

The Dickerson incinerator, also called the Resource Recovery Facility, has been in operation since 1995. County officials say approximately 600,000 tons of the county’s waste is processed and converted into energy there each year. Ash left over from the process is taken to a landfill near Richmond, Virginia.
