U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against a man charged in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 270 in Montgomery County, Maryland, that killed a mother and daughter last month.
Jose Caballero Nolasco, 32, is accused of driving the wrong way on I-270 around 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 29 before his Ford Mustang collided head-on with a Toyota Camry near the I-270 Spur in Bethesda. Investigators found beer cans inside the Mustang and alleged Caballero Nolasco was driving under the influence, according to charging documents previously reported by WTOP.
The crash killed Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her 23-year-old daughter, Areebah Jahin, of Burke and Alexandria, Virginia. An 8-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries, and a 62-year-old man suffered minor injuries.
A judge ordered him held without bond following the crash.
ICE identified Caballero Nolasco as a citizen of El Salvador who is in the United States illegally and said it has lodged a detainer with local authorities. An ICE detainer asks law enforcement to notify the agency before a person is released from custody and may allow ICE to take that person into its custody.
Caballero Nolasco is charged with two counts of gross negligent manslaughter, two counts of homicide by motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and one count of life-threatening injury by motor vehicle.
“This tragedy was completely avoidable,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a statement. “Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin should still be alive. ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to commit to not releasing this killer back onto our streets. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their family, and for a swift recovery for those who were injured.”
