The beautiful weather and a day off work brought thousands out to Kensington, Maryland, for the 59th annual Labor Day Parade and Festival.
For locals such as Stephen Lukacs, this is a must every year.
“This is our 42nd or 43rd parade, but it’s tradition,” he said.
Elaborate balloon costumes were among the favorite along the parade route.
“We always love just feeling like part of the community when we see people like in the parade that we know. It just makes us feel more sort of involved and connected,” Tracy Mburu said.
Her children had clear favorites.
“Candy and fire trucks,” Benji Mburu said.
Older sister Isabella Mburu shared her favorites as well.
“My favorite part was like everyone being happy and like having a smile on their face,” she said.
Members of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America and Scouting America, previously called the Boy Scouts, local churches and local political candidates filled out much of the parade lineup.
Thousands of people were along the route, and the wonderful weather may have had something to do with the great turnout.
“After last week, where I think it was the hottest day of the year in September, maybe, yeah, it’s pretty nice right now,” David Westbrook said.
Kids also caught a look at a favorite super hero, Captain Maryland.
“Captain Maryland does parades. Captain Maryland does all kinds of things,” he told WTOP.
He comes complete with a Maryland flag-themed 3D-printed helmet and an Old Bay utility belt.
“Kids haven’t been Marylanders long enough to get the joke, but the adults love it,” he said.

“We were trying to recognize the songs. That’s also fun,” Westbrook said. “Gotta keep your phones away, so no cheating.”
