

Modern cars are packed with more technology than ever, but actually using all of those features while driving is not always getting easier. Hyundai and Kia may have an interesting answer. According to a patent application recently highlighted by Car and Driver, the automakers are exploring a system that combines voice commands with simple pointing gestures, potentially letting occupants control certain vehicle functions without having to perfectly explain what they want.
The idea is laid out in U.S. patent application 2026/0260654 A1, titled “Method and Apparatus for Performing Voice Command Based on Gesture Recognition.” Instead of forcing someone to say something overly specific like “open the front passenger-side window,” the system could potentially understand a person pointing toward that window and simply saying “open.” Cameras and other sensors inside the cabin would monitor the gesture, while the vehicle’s voice-recognition software would determine what the occupant is asking the car to do.

Where Hyundai’s concept gets more interesting is its ability to figure out who is actually giving the command. The patent describes technology capable of identifying which seat a voice came from and then matching that occupant with the appropriate hand gesture. That could be especially useful in a vehicle full of passengers, where several people may be moving their hands or talking at the same time. The system could use factors such as the location, size, movement, and even orientation of a person’s hand to determine which gesture belongs to the person speaking.
The technology would not necessarily be limited to opening windows either. Hyundai’s patent describes the ability to control functions including climate systems, seats, seat heaters, media features, and other vehicle equipment. It could also potentially help occupants understand unfamiliar controls. Someone could point at or touch a button and ask the vehicle what it does, allowing the car’s virtual assistant to provide an explanation. That type of interaction could be far more natural than digging through digital menus or searching through an owner’s manual.
Of course, a patent application does not mean this technology is headed directly into the next Hyundai or Kia model. Automakers regularly patent ideas that never make it to production, and this system could remain experimental. Still, combining voice recognition with gestures seems like a more practical approach than relying on elaborate hand motions alone. If Hyundai can make the system quick, accurate, and smart enough to understand who is pointing at what, it could turn one of the simplest human behaviors into a surprisingly useful way to interact with increasingly complicated cars.
