The 2028 Volvo XC40 is getting another round of updates, and while you might need a keen eye to spot everything from across a parking lot, there is more going on here than a simple grille-and-wheel refresh. Volvo has reworked the front and rear styling, upgraded the cabin technology, and added more sophisticated safety hardware to its smallest luxury SUV. The overall shape remains instantly recognizable as an XC40, which is probably the point. Rather than reinventing one of its more distinctive designs, Volvo has focused on cleaning it up and bringing the technology underneath up to date.
Every body panel ahead of the A-pillars is new for 2028, including the hood and front fenders, even though the changes are intentionally subtle. The grille is slimmer and wears a new mesh pattern inspired by the diagonal element in Volvo’s familiar badge, while redesigned headlights offer a fresh interpretation of the brand’s Thor’s Hammer lighting signature. The updated XC40 also introduces matrix LED headlights for the U.S. market. Around back, slimmer-looking LED taillights, a revised liftgate, and a reshaped bumper give the SUV a tidier appearance. New 18-, 19-, and 20-inch wheel designs complete the exterior makeover.
Under the hood, Volvo is sticking with the familiar 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain, but there is one significant lineup change. Front-wheel drive is going away, making all-wheel drive standard across the 2028 XC40 range. That means the previous 194-horsepower front-drive configuration will no longer serve as the entry point. For buyers living in areas with rain, snow, and changing road conditions, standard all-wheel drive should fit naturally with the XC40’s practical personality, even if it may nudge the starting price higher once final numbers are announced.
The most obvious cabin upgrade is a larger 11.2-inch center touchscreen replacing the previous 9.0-inch display. Volvo is pairing it with updated Google-based infotainment software and Gemini AI integration, giving the system a more modern foundation for voice commands and connected features. The wireless phone charger has also been improved, while ambient interior lighting makes its first appearance in the XC40. New trim choices include Black Ash, aluminum, Brown Ash wood, and an available Arianne Cardamom leather treatment, giving buyers more ways to dress up what has traditionally been one of the cleaner interiors in the class.
As expected from Volvo, safety technology gets plenty of attention as well. Additional cameras, radar units, and ultrasonic sensors support an improved Pilot Assist system with lane-change assistance, while the 360-degree camera gains a 3D viewing mode. There is also a new warning system designed to alert occupants about approaching cyclists or other traffic before they open a door. Production of the Belgian-built 2028 Volvo XC40 is expected to begin later this year, with U.S. sales scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. Pricing has not been announced, although Volvo expects it to remain close to the outgoing model, which currently starts at a little over $41,000. For a refresh that looks modest at first, the 2028 XC40 packs in a surprisingly meaningful list of improvements.
