Police charge 87-year-old Maryland man with murder after roommate found dead

An 87-year-old Frederick, Maryland man is charged with murder after authorities said he led investigators to his home where his roommate was found dead.

Irwin Joseph Dickstein is charged with first and second-degree murder in the death of 63-year-old Michael Roy Bushnell, according to court records and the City of Frederick Police Department. The men lived at the Franklin Street home where officers found Bushnell’s body Sunday.

According to charging documents cited by The Frederick News-Post, an associate pastor at Frederick Christian Fellowship Church contacted a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputy after a congregant said he had killed someone.

When the deputy arrived at the church, Dickstein was still there and told the deputy the address where Bushnell’s body was discovered, police said.

Investigators spoke with a man who had driven Dickstein to the church. According to prosecutors, during the ride, Dickstein told the man that he had shot Bushnell.

The man said Dickstein also put an item in the trunk of the car. After obtaining a search warrant, investigators found a Beretta handgun case containing a weapon.

The Frederick News-Post also reported that a neighbor told investigators the roommates argued after Bushnell shut off power while repairing an electrical outlet. The neighbor reported hearing multiple loud bangs from the home around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Court records reviewed by WTOP show Dickstein was ordered held without bond and directed to undergo a competency evaluation to determine whether he can assist himself in his own defense. A competency hearing is scheduled for Oct. 13, with a preliminary hearing set for Oct. 21.
