Drivers around Manassas are seeing an uptick in orange cones, lane closures and detours this month, as work begins in earnest on the long-planned Sudley Road roundabout entering Old Town.
The over $5 million project is replacing the signalized intersection at Sudley Road, Centerville Road and Prescott Avenue with a two-lane roundabout designed to improve traffic flow and create a more welcoming gateway into the city’s downtown.
New street lighting and pedestrian safety improvements, including rectangular rapid flashing beacons at crosswalks, are also part of the project, which has a target completion date for October 2027, according to the city.
“The project places an emphasis on safety for drivers and pedestrians, with raised medians, connected sidewalks, pedestrian refuge islands and other improvements incorporated into the design,” the city said in a recent newsletter.
Motorists should expect crews in and around the intersection, reduced traffic capacity in the surrounding area and delays as work progresses. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible, stay alert in the work zone and allow additional travel time.
Updates and detour information can be found on the city’s project page.
