Volkswagen’s funky electric tribute to the classic Microbus will be spending a little more time away from American showrooms. The Volkswagen ID.Buzz is now scheduled to return to the U.S. market as a 2028 model, pushing back a comeback that had previously been planned for the 2027 model year. Volkswagen expects the refreshed electric van to reach dealers during the first half of 2027, extending what has become a surprisingly long pause for one of the brand’s most recognizable new vehicles.
The ID.Buzz originally arrived in the U.S. for the 2025 model year, but Volkswagen elected to skip 2026 before announcing plans to bring the van back for 2027. Sales had been expected to resume in August 2026, complete with several updates, but pricing never materialized and the anticipated launch window quietly passed. Volkswagen has now confirmed that the van will instead return wearing a 2028 model-year designation, giving the company additional time to prepare the next version for American buyers.
That extra wait should at least bring more substantial changes. In addition to previously announced updates such as a NACS-style charging port and a new Tourer configuration geared toward camping and outdoor use, the 2028 Volkswagen ID.Buzz is expected to receive revised software, digital key integration, and vehicle-to-load capability. That last feature could make the Buzz considerably more useful for camping trips, tailgating, and other situations where owners want to power electrical equipment directly from the vehicle’s battery.
The bigger question is whether those improvements will help the ID.Buzz gain stronger footing in the U.S. market. Its retro styling and enormous personality have never really been the problem, but relatively modest driving range and premium pricing have made it a tougher sell than its head-turning design might suggest. Volkswagen sold 6,140 examples during 2025, and lingering inventory continued moving during the first half of 2026 even without a new model-year version. By the time the 2028 ID.Buzz finally arrives, Volkswagen will have another chance to prove that its modern electric Bus can be more than an attention-grabbing nostalgia piece and become a more compelling everyday family EV.
