A jump from summer to fall: Chilly, wet weather descends across DC region as cold front moves in

After days of hot weather, summer has plunged to fall in the DC region.

Residents will spend much of the day under cloudy, rainy conditions as a cold front creeps in and stalls over the area.

Isolated showers are possible throughout Saturday as the day’s peak temperatures max out in the 60s. It’s possible some sunshine will make a brief appearance.

The biggest chance for rain, according to forecasters, is Sunday.

The National Weather Service says showers will start before 3 p.m. and continue into Sunday evening. “New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible,” the agency said in its forecast.

A slight breeze will stick around for much of the weekend.

The looming workweek will prove mostly dry and cool. Monday will set off the week with a strong breeze that could see wind gusts get as high as 25 mph, according to forecasters.

FORECAST:

SATURDAY: Mostly Cloudy, Isolated Shower Possible
Highs: 65-70
Winds: Northeast 5-10 mph
A much cooler day with temperatures nearly 20 degrees lower than Friday. High pressure building to the north will keep a light north to northeasterly flow in place, holding highs mainly in the mid 60s. The stalled front will remain well to the south, and much of the day should stay mainly dry, although clouds will remain stubborn and there will still be some uncertainty over how far north any showers may reach.

SUNDAY: Periods of Rain
Highs: 63-68
Winds: Southeast 5-10 mph
Rain chances increase again as moisture begins riding north over the stalled front and an area of low pressure develops along it. Periods of rain may spread back into the Washington, with the best chance during the day. It will stay cloudy and cool with highs generally in the mid to upper 60s. Rain should gradually begin to pull away Sunday evening.

MONDAY: Partly to Mostly Sunny, Breezy
Highs: near 70
Winds: Northwest 10-15, Gusts to 25 mph
Drier air returns as another cold front moves through the area. Any lingering shower early should be brief, followed by increasing sunshine and a noticeable drop in humidity. It will turn breezy with west to northwest winds gusting to 25 mph as the front passes. Highs will reach the upper 60s to lower 70s, with much cooler air settling in Monday night.
