Imagine spending a lazy, pleasant weekend day at an iconic spot in the nation’s capital with hundreds of beers to try.
The 14th annual Snallygaster beer festival – one of the biggest in the country – is taking place Saturday on Pennsylvania Avenue near The National Gallery of Art.
Tickets cost $75, which “gets you unlimited tastes of 450 different beers from 175 brewers from all over the world,” said Greg Engert, beer director of the Neighborhood Restaurant Group, which puts on the festival.
He added there will also be food trucks, live music and stuff for the kids to do.
The festival has grown from about 3,000 people when it first started in 2012.
“Over the years, it keeps getting bigger and better,” Engert said. “We keep adding brewers. And this year we expect to have closer to 8,000 people on Pennsylvania Avenue. It’s the perfect backdrop with the Capitol building in the background. It really has become a beast of a festival.”
Your admission fee also gets you a commemorative tasting glass to sample all those beers in.
General admission gets started at 2 p.m. and you can learn more about buying tickets on the festival’s website. The festival supports Arcadia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a more equitable and sustainable food system in the D.C. region.
“Even though craft beer has softened a bit,” Engert said. “There are so many more options out there today and craft beer is everywhere. It really is the best day to get reacquainted with craft beer in the nation’s capital.”
