2028 Jaguar Type 01 Arrives With 1,015 HP and a Design That Changes Everything

Jaguar has spent the past couple of years telling everyone that its reinvention would be anything but subtle, and now we finally know what that really means. The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 is here as the first production model of the British brand’s radically different future, bringing more than 1,000 horsepower, serious electric range and styling that looks almost untouched from the dramatic Type 00 concept that previewed it. Whether you love the direction or still need some time to process it, one thing is certain. Jaguar has no interest in disappearing quietly into the luxury EV crowd.

The Type 01 is officially a four-door electric grand tourer, but its proportions have far more in common with the classic idea of a long-hood Jaguar than the cab-forward shape we have come to expect from modern EVs. The hood seems to stretch forever, the windshield and passenger compartment sit unusually far back, and the roofline stays remarkably low for such a large car. Riding on massive 23-inch wheels and measuring more than 17 feet long, the Type 01 has the kind of visual presence normally reserved for low-volume exotics and ultra-luxury machines. There is no rear window either, with Jaguar turning to cameras and digital displays instead.

That commitment to style carries straight into the cabin, where Jaguar has clearly prioritized theater over simply maximizing interior volume. A prominent center spine divides the interior into four individual seating areas and helps create an almost architectural feel inside. The low roof and dramatic exterior proportions mean the cabin is not as cavernous as the Type 01’s exterior dimensions might suggest, particularly in the rear, but that appears to be an intentional tradeoff. Jaguar seems far more interested in making occupants feel like they are sitting inside something special than creating another rolling luxury lounge with acres of unused space.

Technology is present everywhere, although Jaguar has made an effort to integrate it rather than simply covering the dashboard with screens. A 24-inch OLED display serves as the primary interface in front of the driver, while smaller 7-inch touchscreens handle frequently used functions including climate and seating controls. An Nvidia-based electronic architecture supports over-the-air updates and helps reduce the amount of conventional wiring running through the vehicle. There is also an elaborate immersive audio system highlighted by a full-width panoramic soundbar, continuing the idea that the Type 01 should feel as much like a luxury object as a transportation device.

Fortunately, Jaguar did not spend all its energy on styling. The Type 01 uses three electric motors, with one driving the front axle and two powering the rear, to produce roughly 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 lb-ft of torque. Jaguar says that is enough to launch the big GT from zero to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds. Those numbers make this the most powerful Jaguar road car ever produced, but outright acceleration is only part of the story. Intelligent torque vectoring, a 50:50 weight distribution, adaptive dampers, air suspension and rear-wheel steering are all intended to make this very large machine feel considerably smaller once the road starts bending.

The battery is just as substantial as the performance hardware. Jaguar fits the Type 01 with a 118-kWh usable battery pack and an 850-volt electrical architecture, targeting as much as 400 miles of EPA-rated driving range. Jaguar also estimates roughly 320 miles of range when cruising steadily at highway speeds, which is an unusually specific claim and one that should make future real-world range testing particularly interesting. Plug into a 350-kW DC fast charger and Jaguar says the Type 01 can add as much as 200 miles of range in around 13 minutes under ideal conditions.

There is some serious engineering hiding beneath the Type 01’s enormous bodywork as well. Jaguar claims a drag coefficient of just 0.23, an impressive figure considering the upright nose and intentionally dramatic proportions. Active aerodynamic elements, including cooling vanes and a deployable rear spoiler, help manage airflow without forcing the designers to turn the car into the familiar rounded shape used by many efficiency-focused EVs. Jaguar even developed an entirely new platform, known as Jaguar Electric Architecture, largely because an existing architecture could not deliver the proportions designers wanted while still packaging the necessary battery and suspension hardware.

Of course, the Type 01 represents something much bigger than a new flagship sedan. Jaguar essentially cleared the table to reinvent itself as a lower-volume, significantly more expensive luxury brand, putting considerable pressure on this car to succeed. Instead of chasing BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi directly, Jaguar is attempting to move further upscale while emphasizing design, exclusivity and emotional appeal. That is a risky strategy, especially at a time when the premium EV market has become increasingly competitive, but playing it safe probably would have done little to revive interest in Jaguar either.

U.S. pricing is expected to settle around the $130,000 mark, putting the Type 01 well above Jaguars of the recent past while remaining far below hand-built electric flagships such as the Cadillac Celestiq. Orders are scheduled to open in early 2027, with the first customer deliveries expected during the second half of the year. We will have to drive the Type 01 before knowing whether Jaguar has successfully matched its extraordinary styling with equally memorable road manners, but as a statement of intent, it could hardly be louder. Jaguar wanted its comeback car to be impossible to ignore. On that front, the Type 01 has already succeeded.
