Antonio “Slick” Hawley was sentenced to 32 years in prison Friday for the fatal shooting of Aaron Wiggins after a flag football game at a school in Southeast D.C.
Judge Danya Dayson also ordered Hawley to serve five years of probation upon his release from incarceration.
Hawley was convicted in February of one count of first-degree murder while armed, one count of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and one count of carrying a pistol without a license.
Hawley, 22, of D.C., shot and killed 26-year-old Wiggins on Oct. 6, 2021, at Watkins Elementary after the two men argued over a flag football game.
According to authorities, Hawley was 18 at the time of the shooting. The two teams playing late-night flag football had trash-talked each other before the game.
Wiggins scored the winning touchdown on the final play for his team, prompting further arguments between the men. Witnesses said players were cursing at each other, and things quickly escalated.
After the field lights had turned off, Hawley retrieved a gun from another player’s bag and fired 17 shots, hitting Wiggins 13 times. Wiggins died at the scene.
Eyewitnesses identified Hawley after he fled the crime scene, and video footage supported the witnesses’ claims.
Law enforcement arrested Hawley in December 2021.
