Study: Almost 1 in 4 Montgomery Co. residents are over 60 — and that number is expected to surge

Almost a quarter of Montgomery County, Maryland, residents were 60 or older in 2025, and that population is projected to grow significantly, according to an Age-Friendly Montgomery study.

The number of those over 60 is expected to grow nearly four times as fast as the under-60 population through 2045, the study found.

Individuals 80 and above represent the county’s fastest-growing demographic segment.

“As Montgomery County continues to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for people of all ages and abilities, we need to make sure the County adapts to meet the needs of residents through all stages of their lives,” Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said in a statement.

“Understanding their experiences here and now is vital to that work.”

The study identified older adults living in Montgomery County who need additional support, including those “who live alone, residents without nearby adult children, Upcounty and rural residents, non-English speakers, Black and African American residents, LGBTQ+ residents, low-income residents, and residents with dementia and their caregivers.”

Statistics show that many older adults are homeowners. “While the county’s overall homeownership rate is 64%, households headed by adults age 65 and older have a significantly higher homeownership rate of 80%,” according to the study.
