A D.C. man was found guilty Wednesday of the murder of an anti-gun violence activist outside a Largo, Maryland, restaurant in November 2024.
Prosecutors said, Terrelle Bailey, 37, was found guilty of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the shooting death of Neil McDonald.
The shooting happened just after midnight Nov. 30, 2024, as there was a dispute over a woman inside Jasper’s restaurant. Prosecutors said security kicked Bailey, McDonald and others out of the restaurant. Then Bailey shot McDonald five times in the restaurant’s parking lot, killing him.
“For his mother and his father, as well as his family and friends, this loss is unimaginable. No parent should ever have to bury one child, let alone two, because of gun violence,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Tara Jackson said at a news conference. “Today’s verdict does not bring back Neil or erase the pain that the family has endured, but it does hold the person responsible for Neil’s death.”
McDonald founded Stay Solid, a nonprofit organization that is designed for youth mental health and being against gun violence.
He started the organization after his brother was shot and killed five years before his own death.
“These last almost two years have been extremely difficult, especially to have to explain to my grandson, the reasons why his father is so loving,” McDonald’s mom said. “It’s been so hard, and I’m so grateful to everyone in our support system.
Even though crime is down in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Jackson said there are too many illegal guns on the streets.
“I want to continue to warn those who would carry illegal guns, those who are thinking about carrying illegal guns, and those who will listen, that guns kill,” she said. “Guns aren’t keeping you safe.…They are killing you or they’re landing you in prison for a very long time.”
Jackson said they will be asking the judge for the maximum sentence for Bailey at his sentencing hearing Dec. 2.
