A truck struck and killed a 13-year-old riding a bicycle near a Fairfax City, Virginia, shopping area Wednesday, police said.
First responders arrived at the 3900 block of Pickett Road at around 2:30 p.m.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene, the City of Fairfax Police Department said. The driver and the vehicle, described as a large truck, were found nearby.
The truck was leaving a nearby shopping center when it struck the child, police said.
The 13-year-old was one of three Fairfax County Public schools students involved in incidents with vehicles Wednesday while riding a bike or scooter, Superintendent Michelle Reid said in a letter sent to families and staff and posted online.
“Tragically, one of these incidents resulted in the death of one of our middle school students. My heart is with the student’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire school community as we confront this heartbreaking loss,” she wrote.
Officers with Fairfax City and Fairfax County continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and anyone with information is asked to call 703-385-7924.
Reid urged families to take time to talk with their children about safety as they travel to and from school.
“And tomorrow, please slow down, stay alert, and look out for one another. A few extra moments of care can make an enormous difference,” she said.
