A number of universities in the D.C. region are getting high marks in the new Forbes ranking of the nation’s top colleges.

The University of Virginia is the highest-ranked public university in the region on Forbes’ 2027 list.

UVA came in at No. 28 in the rankings, which evaluate 500 four-year colleges and universities based largely on how well they prepare students for life after college.

Several other universities in the D.C. region also earned spots near the top of the list.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore ranked No. 11 overall, while D.C.’s Georgetown University came in at No. 31.

The University of Maryland, College Park, ranked No. 44 and was recognized for its strong research programs.

Forbes considers several factors when determining its annual rankings, including graduation rates, student debt, alumni earnings and career success.

The publication says its methodology places more emphasis on student outcomes than on a university’s reputation or selectivity.

MIT claimed the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row.
