Saturday’s gray skies are setting the stage for a soggy finish to the weekend’s first day across the D.C. region.
Strong storms could bring heavy rain and localized flooding problems to parts of the area Saturday night, especially on streets, highways and in areas with poor drainage.
Rain and thunderstorms become likely Saturday night. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected after 1 a.m., with patchy fog developing after 2 a.m.
“Drivers could run into ponding on roads and other trouble spots where water tends to collect,” said John Feerick, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.com.
The main concern won’t necessarily be severe thunderstorms, but how much rain falls — and how quickly.
Periods of heavy rain could cause isolated flash flooding, particularly around creeks, streams and low-water crossings. A few thunderstorms could bring rumbles of thunder overnight, but a widespread severe weather threat is not expected.
Temperatures will remain mild and muggy Saturday night, with lows generally between 68 and 73 degrees and little wind.
The rain will linger into Sunday morning before conditions begin changing quickly.
Showers should taper off by midmorning, with clouds breaking apart and sunshine returning during the afternoon. That sunshine will also crank temperatures back up, with highs reaching the upper 80s and increasing humidity making it feel more like the mid-90s in some spots.
Then comes the reset.
A cold front will usher in noticeably cooler and drier air for the beginning of the workweek. Monday will be sunny and breezy, with highs mainly in the upper 70s and wind gusts approaching 25 mph.
Tuesday may be the pick of the week: mostly sunny, low humidity and highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.
Pleasant late-summer weather should continue Wednesday, with sunshine and temperatures returning to the low-to-mid 80s.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Periods of rain. Lows between 68 and 73.
Winds: Calm
Showers and isolated thunderstorms possible overnight. Besides a few rumbles of thunder, there is no widespread threat for severe storms. Rainfall could be heavy at times leading to a low end flash flooding threat of creaks, streams and low water crossings.
SUNDAY: AM showers, PM sunshine. Highs between 86 and 90.
Winds: Southwest 5-10 mph
Morning showers will taper off by mid-morning and give way to mostly sunny skies by the afternoon and hotter, more humid conditions. Heat index values could be as hot as the mid 90s.
MONDAY: Sunny, breezy. Highs between 75 and 80.
Winds: North 5-15 mph; Gusts: 20-25 mph
Sunny and seasonable day with lower humidity. Northerly breezes could gust up to around 25 mph.
TUESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs between 74 and 79.
Winds: Southeast 5 mph
The nicest day of the week with mostly sunny skies continuing, lower humidity, and slightly cooler than average temperatures.
WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny. Highs between 80 and 85.
Winds: South 5-10 mph
Pleasant late summer weather continues with gradually increasing humidity.
