Thousands of runners, walkers, survivors and supporters are expected in downtown D.C. Sunday for the annual Race to End Women’s Cancer, a fundraising event benefiting research and education focused on gynecologic cancers.

Organized by the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, the event will take place at Freedom Plaza, with a 5K run/walk and a one-mile walk and Kids Fun Run.

The one-mile walk begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9:45 a.m.

The event is expected to cause significant traffic and parking impacts throughout downtown D.C.

Several roads in the area will be affected by the event:

• Portions of Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th streets NW have been closed since 3 a.m.
• Additional closures beginning around 8:15 a.m. along portions of Pennsylvania Avenue, Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue and several streets in Southwest D.C.
• Some closures and restrictions will last into the afternoon, with some streets scheduled to reopen by 2 p.m.
• Parking restrictions will be in effect in designated areas, and vehicles parked in violation may ticked or towed.
• Drivers should expect delays and heavier-than-normal pedestrian traffic near the route.

Organizers recommend that those participating in the event use Metro, with Federal Triangle being the closest station. Drivers who do not need to be in the impacted areas are encouraged to use alternate routes and avoid the race area Sunday morning.
