Follow WTOP’s Matt Kaufax as he explores hidden gems, local landmarks and unique stories across the D.C. area every week. New episodes of WTOP’s “Matt About Town” segment are released each Tuesday and Thursday.
You may not be able to go to space, but you can take the Metro to this hidden NASA gem in Southwest D.C.
In Thursday’s episode of “Matt About Town,” experience “Space for Earth,” a 7-minute journey into the cosmos.
The Space for Earth exhibit, which talks about the solar system and Earth’s climate and biodiversity, is an introspective look at our place in the universe. The experience contains a multitude of striking visual infographics, and at certain points, makes you feel like you’re floating, suspended among the stars.
This exhibit is just one part of a two-lobby setup inside NASA’s headquarters, named for Mary W. Jackson, the administration’s first Black female engineer — whom you may know from the movie “Hidden Figures.”
As Kaufax and friend of the show, D.C. creator/explorer Austin Graff, found out: the Jackson building has so many incredible space exhibits that would stand out in any museum, open five days a week and completely free to the public.
