Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision in which a Jeep Wrangler struck and killed a 62-year-old woman in Aspen Hill on Wednesday night, police said Thursday in a news release.
The collision occurred in the area of Arctic Avenue and Bel Pre Road, police said. The area is a residential neighborhood of single-family homes.
Shortly after 7:20 p.m., police officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to the area for a report of a pedestrian struck, according to police. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found the woman in the road suffering from serious injuries.
MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said in a social media post that the woman was crossing the road when she was struck. According to MCFRS radio transmissions with Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, witnesses told MCFRS crews that the woman was run over and unresponsive for eight minutes.
The woman died at the hospital, police said.
According to police, the driver of the Jeep did not remain at the scene. However, a witness to the collision provided officers with a description of the striking vehicle and the license plate.
Police did not share details about the suspect driver in the release. The driver remains at large.
The department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident, according to the release.
More information, including the name of the woman, will be released following proper notification of next of kin, police said Thursday.
