D.C. Council member Anita Bonds has introduced a bill that would increase the mayor’s salary from $250,000 to $290,000 if it becomes law.
The bill would also increase the salary of the chair of the D.C. Council, currently Phil Mendelson, and the District’s attorney general, currently Brian Schwalb, since D.C. law dictates they both make $10,000 less than the mayor.
In addition to the pay bump, Bonds’ bill would open the door for cost-of-living adjustments to the mayor’s salary, likely based on the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers, as is the case for members of the council.
Mayor Muriel Bowser has been making $250,000 since 2023. She announced last year she won’t be seeking a fourth term and will likely be succeeded by Janeese Lewis George.
Lewis George represents Ward 4 on the D.C. Council and won the District’s June Democratic primary over former D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie and several other hopefuls.
If passed by the council, the salary increases would take effect after approval from the mayor and a 30-day congressional review period.
