Montgomery County is moving to make it easier to rent and less expensive to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs), with the Planning Board showing support on Thursday for proposed legislation that would waive permitting fees for affordable units and remove the owner-occupancy requirement.
At its weekly meeting in Wheaton, the board discussed Bill 41-26 with Montgomery Planning staff and signaled their support for easing the costs for building ADUs in the county. Council President Natali Fani-González (D-Dist. 6) and Councilmember Andrew Friedson (D-Dist. 1) introduced the bill at the County Council on Sept. 14.
