Fight at girls flag football game in Poolesville sends adult to hospital

A fight after a girls flag football game Monday night in Poolesville resulted in one adult being transported to the hospital for treatment, according to a message Tuesday from the principals of the two competing schools, Clarksburg High and Poolesville High.

“This is not how we expect members of either of our school communities, students and adults alike, to represent themselves, their schools or MCPS athletics,” Mark Carothers, principal of Poolesville High, and Anita O’Neill, principal of Clarksburg High, said in a joint message to their school communities. “To be clear, athletic competition can be spirited and emotional, but respect for one another is expected at all times—on the field, on the sidelines and after the game is over.”

According to the letter, “disrespectful behavior” involving students and adults escalated in the parking lot following a girls flag football game between the two schools held at Poolesville High. There was “taunting, arguing and ultimately a physical altercation,” the principals said in the letter. An adult was transported to the hospital for treatment as a result.
