Mother Nature apparently looked at the D.C. area’s weekend forecast and decided it needed a little more misery.
The remnants of Hurricane Isaias are headed toward the region, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds and the possibility of thunderstorms. And if you were hoping for a little sunshine, you might want to make other plans.
Showers are expected to move into the area Saturday evening, the National Weather Service said, gradually spreading from the southwest as the remnants of Isaias approach.
Rain will initially be light to moderate, with overnight temperatures dipping into the upper 50s and low 60s. Easterly winds of 5 to 15 mph could gust as high as 30 mph.
Sunday is shaping up to be the real troublemaker.
A weather alert is in effect as the bulk of Isaias’ remnants will move almost directly over the region, bringing periods of moderate to heavy rain throughout the day.
Forecasters expect widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, raising concerns about localized flash flooding, particularly in areas that receive the heaviest downpours.
The weather service said the Blue Ridge Mountains could see even more rain as easterly winds push moisture against the mountains, although the timing and location of the heaviest rainfall remain uncertain.
There is also a low risk of severe thunderstorms, primarily in Central Virginia, with thunder possible across the region later Sunday and into the night.
Temperatures won’t offer much consolation, with afternoon highs struggling to reach the mid-60s. Winds will increase to 10 to 20 mph, with gusts approaching 30 mph.
The bottom line? Keep the umbrella handy, watch for water-covered roads and don’t expect much cooperation from the weather.
After all, apparently a perfectly ordinary rainy day just wasn’t dramatic enough.
