83-year-old Montgomery Co. man dies after being hit by truck at Rockville gas station

An 83-year-old man from Silver Spring died over the weekend after suffering serious injuries in a crash that occurred in the parking lot of a Rockville gas station, Montgomery County Police said.

Authorities said in a Sunday news release that the pedestrian crash occurred at Friday at the FreeState gas station in the 500 block of Hungerford Road. First responders with the Rockville City Police Department and the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene shortly after 8:30 a.m.

At the scene, first responders found 83-year-old Charles S. Lazar, of Silver Spring, in the parking lot suffering from serious injuries.

Preliminary findings released by authorities indicate Lazar was walking back to his car at the gas station’s parking lot when he was fatally hit by the driver of a white 2016 Chevrolet Silverado who was driving away from a fuel pump. Police said the driver was headed toward Hungerford Road when the collision took place.

Lazar was taken to an area hospital, where his condition deteriorated overnight.

He was pronounced dead Saturday.

Investigators said the driver stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment.

The investigation is ongoing and may take several weeks, or months to complete, authorities said.
