The sound of trumpets and applause will not fill Georgia Avenue this week as part of Howard University’s annual Homecoming celebration.
Howard University’s Homecoming week started Sunday and continues Tuesday with a celebration of the school’s basketball teams, followed by a fashion show, a concert, a step show and a football game Saturday against the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers.
But one thing missing from this year’s lineup is the Homecoming Parade, which has featured celebrities such as La La Anthony, Doug E. Fresh, Keith Sweat and more.
According to the university’s website, the parade has been postponed this year due to ongoing construction and associated impacts along Georgia Avenue.
“This event change was made out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of parade participants, our students, alumni, faculty, staff, community members, and guests,” a university spokesperson said.
Howard University’s Homecoming has been around for more than a century, and the theme for this year’s event is “Wildest Dreams.”
“Wildest Dreams celebrates the limitless possibilities of a Howard University education and the generations of Bison who have transformed bold dreams into extraordinary realities,” according to the university’s homecoming website.
As previously reported, the university is working on adding new dorms and retailers to what is known as Wonder Plaza. The project is expected to be completed in 2029. WTOP reached out to the university to learn more about when the parade will return but did not hear back in time for publication.
