Arlington raises its EV charging fees by 72%

Electric vehicle drivers who use the public charging stations in Arlington, Virginia, will see base fees increase by 72% starting Nov. 1.

The Arlington County Board adopted an updated ordinance on Oct. 20, increasing charging stations’ base fees from 17.46 cents per kilowatt-hour to 30 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The increase will help cover for the capital costs of the chargers and rising electricity costs, the board said. County contractors operate 51 public charging ports.

According to the Virginia Energy Purchasing Governmental Association, electricity prices went up 25% on Oct. 1, causing a 23% increase in costs for accounts serving Arlington electric vehicle charging stations.

Arlington County Board members also directed the county manager to review contracts with electric vehicle charging providers to make sure they are not adding additional fees that weren’t agreed upon.
