An intersection in Loudoun County, Virginia, that slows the daily commute for tens of thousands of people from Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia will be transformed into a roundabout, beginning Thursday, Sept. 16.
Today, there’s a four-way traffic light at the intersection of Virginia Routes 9 and 287, outside of Hillsboro. Virginia’s Department of Transportation says the average daily volume for the intersection is 28,250, with 19,000 vehicles approaching the intersection on Route 9, and 9,250 on Route 287.
Starting Thursday, Loudoun County says the traffic light will be turned off and a new traffic pattern will require drivers to navigate the intersection as a roundabout.
As of early Wednesday morning, a large amount of road widening has already been done, adding extra pavement to encompass what will eventually be a single lane traffic circle, allowing drivers from all directions to slowly merge into the circle, usually without having to come to a full stop.

Beginning Thursday, orange and white reflective barrels will be moved from their current position and flaggers will be on-site to assist traveler and guide drivers through the roundabout.
Construction crews will start installing curbs, signage and striping as they reconfigure the intersection into a roundabout.
According to the county, “area residents may hear intermittent loud noises and vibrations due to ongoing construction operations.”
The roundabout project is expected to be completed by March 2027, according to the county.
